Hope everyone's having a good time here!

I'd love to know, what’s one hunting mistake you’ll always remember? Maybe it was that moment your scope went busted, or you realized the boots you wore were totally wrong, or perhaps you spooked the game way too soon. I’d love to hear your stories. Let’s swap some lessons and have a good laugh along the way!

Never forget that time I messed up big time on a pheasant hunt with my buddies. We were strolling down this hedgerow that just screamed potential. You can sense when the birds are lurking nearby. Sure enough, out of nowhere, a rooster bursts out right in front of me. It was like a scene from a movie. I mount my shotgun, lead him just right, and pull the trigger... and all I get is a click. Yup, I’d left the safety on.

By the time I got that sorted out, the bird was already soaring over into the next field, probably laughing at me. My friends didn’t let me live that down for the rest of the day and they kept bringing it up all season long.

Since then, though, I’ve made it a point to check the safety first thing before we even start walking. Seriously, I run that through my head every time now. It seems so simple, but in the heat of the moment, it’s surprisingly easy to let those little details slip your mind.

The best of memories are hunting with my wife and kids in the pacific N/W. We put together a nice elk camp with canvas cabin tent and wood stove. We usually prepared everything carefully and spent a couple weeks a year up in the mountains of NE Washington just south of the Canadian boarder.

One year, I couldn’t wait to get up there, so I packed the truck and trailer throughout the week so we could leave right after work. We drove about 3 1/2 hours, set up camp in the dark, built a fire, settled in, ready for bed.

I decided to check the guns and get them loaded, just in case we had any night visitors. No guns. I didn’t pack them early to keep them secure. I was in such a hurry to leave, I totally forgot them. I drove the round trip in the middle of the night getting back before daybreak. We were too tired to hunt that morning and slept in.

It’s actually kind of funny 25 years later. Lol
