Maybe it was that moment your scope went busted, or you realized the boots you wore were totally wrong, or perhaps you spooked the game way too soon. I’d love to hear your stories. Never forget that time I messed up big time on a pheasant hunt with my buddies. We were strolling down this hedgerow that just screamed potential. You can sense when the birds are lurking nearby. Sure enough, out of nowhere, a rooster bursts out right in front of me. It was like a scene from a movie. I mount my shotgun, lead him just right, and pull the trigger... and all I get is a click. Yup, I’d left the safety on.

By the time I got that sorted out, the bird was already soaring over into the next field, probably laughing at me. My friends didn’t let me live that down for the rest of the day and they kept bringing it up all season long.

Since then, though, I’ve made it a point to check the safety first thing before we even start walking. Seriously, I run that through my head every time now. It seems so simple, but in the heat of the moment, it’s surprisingly easy to let those little details slip your mind.
