What would be Indiana's national firearm?

I had a good laugh at the shop this morning during a conversation with one of the regulars. He said every state should have a “state firearm,” and now I can’t stop pondering what Indiana’s would look like. I picture something blue-collar, trustworthy and probably older than half the guys here. What do you think it should be?

Other state emblems are historical.

The first areas settled were predominantly French, along the Ohio and Wabash rivers. Those that settled along the river became tough backwoodsman and river boat men. Thus the French origin for “Hoosier”.

Something like a Hawken or Long Rifle most likely.

I’ve seen them called plains rifles before. I think the idea origin was out of Pennsylvania. Kentucky rifles were a bit shorter. And the Hawken shorter yet, more of a Mountain gun.

Imagine carrying that long barrel through thick woods and brush. It’s no wonder so few survived. I expect those stocks were regularly split in those early Indian wars. And field maintenance or the lack was not conducive to black powder.
