Hello,
I'm not a huge fan of the AR-15, preferring instead wood and steel to aluminum and fiberglass.
However, it strikes me as prudent to have one around, and it would fill a niche that isn't currently occupied in my modest collection, that of a high-speed .22 caliber. I was considering an AK in 5.45x39 since I handload and my preference for wood would be met, but it would probably be better to have something that takes widely available commercial ammo.
This evening I was surfing the web and found that Hi-Point of all manufacturers makes an AR called the HP-15 ( https://www.hi-pointfirearms.com/hi-point-hp15/556-rifle/556-16in-blk/ )
The receiver is metal and everything seems to be milspec or better. It only costs $500.
I'm wondering if any of you have experience with these. There are limited written reviews with those I've found being mostly advertisements-posing-as-articles in online magazines. I'll be searching YouTube tomorrow, but I have the same reservations about those videos as I do about magazine articles.
So... I had a Hi-Point 995 carbine once. It was butt ugly and felt cheaply made, but it worked and was still working when I sold it. Prior to that I had a Stallard Arms pistol, which was a predecessor to the Hi-Point line. Big and chunky it was, but it always worked. Those two guns are why I'm even looking at a Hi-Point, but the AR platform is also a bit more complex than straight blowback, so I'm looking for real-world experience prior to pulling the trigger on one of these.
Thanks!
