Between match fees, travel, ammo, general wear on gear and a couple of upgrades I picked up along the way, it added up. One upgrade I needed and a couple I probably did not. The total came out higher than I expected but still manageable and it felt worth it for the progress and enjoyment. Competitive shooting is not cheap, so it helps to plan for it properly.

You budget for matches, then reality budgets for ammo, travel, and small upgrades you swear were necessary.

I actually did the math after my first season, and it hit me ...I could’ve easily bought a decent used car with what I spent. Ammo was the real killer, match ammo isn’t the same as practice ammo, so you’re basically burning through two different types. It’s totally worth it for building skills, but yeah make sure you budget for it.

USPSA isn't exactly a cheap hobby, but it doesn't have to catch you completely off guard either. Just make sure you budget for all the ammo you'll burn through, the travel to matches and those necessary upgrades that seem to find their way into your gear bag halfway through the season.
