I have a .243 Ruger American, and I’m looking to see what it shoots best. What bullet weights and brands have you had success with? I’m mostly interested in the lighter varmint-style ammu.

The .243s I’ve had, including a Ruger American, have liked anything loaded with the following bullets:
Nosler 70 Ballistic Tip
Sierra 85 BTHP
Hornady 87 V-Max

Winchester Supreme varmint ammo (black box) using a 55 grain Combined Technology bullet makes little groups but I don’t think is made anymore.

Hornady varmint ammo using the 58 grain V-Max has done great also. I think it’s currently sold under the Superperformance line.

I don’t currently have a .243, but I have a 6mm Remington. They are the same class of cartridge using the same bullets. They were close competitors when introduced about the same time.

The .243 dominated the market because of its ability to stabilize heavier bullets more suitable for deer sized animals. It is a great cartridge. You may find your rifle to be more accurate with heavier bullets. But it should still shoot lighter varmint class bullets well enough to get the job done at shorter ranges. You will just have to try a variety of bullets and find out what yours likes.

As far as .243 sized varmint bullets, I prefer the various polymer tipped offerings. They are typically more accurate and perform well on impact. My favorite among those is the Hornady 58 grain V-max. They are tough on coyotes and antelope. I prefer a .22 or .17 caliber for smaller critters.
