Back to gun school.
Twenty-some years ago I attended my first defensive shooting class at the Boone Co Sheriff’s Office in Lebanon. They host a lot of nationally-known instructors throughout the year, but this one was taught by their own people. Their own people happened to have been adjunct instructors at Gunsite, so they weren’t just some guys who were available that weekend.

That was a great class, and was more or less the first three days on a Gunsite pistol class crammed into two days. This class was done as a public service and they charge enough to cover the cost of targets and other materials and little more. They’ve held it a few times a year for maybe thirty years now.

The students were made up of people from match shooters and those who attend classes regularly for fun, on down to people who were literally taking their gun and ear muffs out of the packaging. I was struck by how well the instructors managed to hold the interest of the experienced students while keeping the new ones up to speed all the way through. THAT takes some skill.

That class was called “Principles of the Defensive Pistol”.

This year, for the first time, they are offering a follow-on “Advanced Principles of the Defensive Pistol”.

When I saw it, I had to sign up. It will be interesting to see the differences… if I can remember enough from the original to compare. I’ve had a lot of classes since then, roughly half right there at BCSO. The instructors from my first class there have moved on to bigger things, so I don’t expect to have them this time, but it would sure be nice if they came back for it!

It was great to be back there. Boone County has a great range and an even better training cadre. I had forgotten how nice things were there, and plan to get back in the habit of being a regular.

Pretty soon they’ll be signing you up as an instructor.
I doubt it. You probably have to be a deputy first.
Although if I was going to do that, that’s the #1 place I’d want to be.

I wonder if they take 61-year old new hires?
