Are ticks really that bad, or are we overreacting?

I see so much chatter about ticks and the diseases they carry, but is it possible we’re overreacting? What do they actually do in the ecosystem, and are we just being paranoid? Curious to hear everyone's thoughts!

I've collected and killed more than 4 dozen ticks this season from two dogs and myself.

Yah, it’s best not to invite any strange women in the house. A steady diet of garlic keeps them at bay as well.
