Truth about shotgun scopes

I'm thinking of swapping out the red dot on my 870 deer gun for a 1-4x scope. I've been hearing a lot about how shotgun recoil is different and that you actually need a sturdier scope for it. Is that really true? Have you ever had a scope rattle apart or lose its zero on you? Or is this just one of those myths people talk about?

If you're planning to put a scope on your shotgun for deer hunting with slugs, make sure you choose one that's designed for the job. Look for scopes that specifically say they’re compatible with shotguns or muzzleloaders. And don't forget about the mount. A sturdy mount is just as crucial as the scope itself. You want everything to work perfectly together when you're in the field.

Aside from handling the recoil of a shotgun, eye relief is a consideration. I have an old Tasco Pronghorn mounted on my .54 caliber muzzleloader. It has held zero for 20 years. However, I have had the scope bite me a couple of times. When I put a scope on my Mossberg 500, I opted for a shotgun scope. I have had no eye relief issues at all.
