just got a 10/22, what should I do first?

just picked up my first 10/22, and I already get why people love these things. shoots great right out of the box, but what really sold me is how customizable it is.

I'm trying not to go overboard right away, but I'd like to slowly make it my own. curious what upgrades or small mods you've done that made the biggest difference — or just made it more fun to shoot.

Automatic bolt release. That's way out front on that list if it doesn't have one already.

Beyond that, it all depends on what you want to do with it. This can go any direction.

I would highly recommend a trigger replacement. I bought my 10/22 about 25 years ago. The trigger was so heavy, that all of my rounds we striking right of aim point. I am right handed, so, I was pulling it off target. After I mounted a scope, I didn't have the same POI issues. However the trigger pull didn't improve. A couple of years ago I replaced my trigger with the Ruger BX-Trigger. It lowered the trigger pull to less than 3 pounds and it is sweet.

I remember "back in the day." The Bass Pro or Cabela's giant catalog would have at least four pages of 10/22 upgrades. Triggers. barrels. stocks, magazines, you name it.

I even remember a system that would mount two barrel/trigger assemblies side by side. It had a hand crank that actuated the two triggers alternately. Basically it turned two barrels into a "Gatling gun." Imagine showing up at the range with one of those!
