California Flake Flux
There is, or was, a guy out there making gas check maker kits, and when I’d buy a kit, I’d get a sample of what he called California Flake Flux. It’s just sawdust, but from a particular tree that seems to work really well.
No, he’s not saying what type of tree.
I’ve also used wax from toilet rings. Works fine.
I have not had as much luck with Marvelux.

I used candle stubs for years. They were castaways from Christmas Eve candlelight service. Carnauba wax from cheese rinds, or your favorite beverage, bees wax, paraffin, etc., they all work fine.
I read somewhere about sawdust and started collecting my wood shop and chainsaw leftovers. It was then I began to understand the oxygen barrier of carbon prevents oxidation and helps combine your alloy.
Now I use pine shavings. You can get a lifetime supply at the farm store for a few dollars. Or a small bag at the pet shop.

I usually use candle wax or other such wax. I have used sawdust. I usually use the wax.
After is starts to smoke well, I touch it with an igniter to burn the fumes. I get a less smokey space that way. Even in a well ventilated space it can be an obnoxious odor.

I've used paraffin wax, sawdust, beeswax from making lube, etc.
I think the best I found was a pinch off one of those waxy firestarter logs you use for lazy firemaking when you're camping in your travel trailer.

Fire starter logs. I have not tried that. It makes sense, paraffin and sawdust.
